Questions from the cockpit

Skipper Questions

Short answers to help you make a smaller, clearer plan. For actual navigation, use current official information and appropriate training.

What makes a passage suitable for a first Nordic trip?

Choose a short, well-researched passage within your existing skills, with suitable shelter, clear navigation and realistic stopping or return options. No route is universally safe for beginners.

Start with the passage-planning framework.

Are archipelago waters always sheltered?

No. Shelter depends on wind direction, fetch, swell and local geography. Channels and gaps can funnel wind, and open reaches may remain exposed.

Can I navigate using the illustrations on this site?

No. Every schematic and rendered navigation visual is illustrative only. Use current official charts or authorised chart products, notices to mariners and appropriate pilotage information.

Is there a single wind limit for a small boat?

No. Suitable limits depend on the boat, loading, crew capability, sea state, exposure and available refuge. Establish conservative limits before departure and postpone when uncertain.

Read the weather-decision guidance.

Do I need to reserve a guest-harbour berth?

Arrangements vary by harbour and season. Contact the operator directly to confirm booking, visitor areas, boat-size limits and arrival procedures. Keep an alternative.

Is a mobile phone enough for communication?

Not necessarily. Coverage, battery life, water exposure and usability can limit a phone. Assess suitable marine communication equipment and the relevant licensing and training requirements.

Review communication and equipment priorities.

Can I land on any island?

No. Access rights vary by country and location, and may be restricted by protected areas, wildlife rules, private premises or local regulations. Check current rules before landing.

Keep away from nesting wildlife, avoid damage to vegetation and use established facilities where available. A right of access should never be assumed to include unrestricted mooring, camping or fires.

What should I check before entering a harbour?

Assess the approach, current restrictions, wind and swell exposure, depth for your draft, berth arrangements and room to abandon the manoeuvre. Confirm current details with the operator.

Use the harbour-arrival notes.

Does the contact composer send my message?

No. It prepares plain text on your device. You can copy or download the note, then send it yourself using your email application.

Open the passage-note composer.
